Here at Dublin TEFL we want to help you be the best teacher you can be. Sometimes a specific training course or qualification can be the answer. Sometimes individual one-to-one work is what’s needed.
Whether you’re newly-qualified and starting out or you have years of experience, coaching can be the right option to ensure you meet your own specific goals.
What is coaching?
The term has many definitions in different fields, sports and business being the most notable. When we talk about coaching teachers, we’re really talking about instructional coaching. You invite us to be your instructional coach and we work together with you in order to:
get a clear picture of where their teaching is currently
identify goals
choose teaching strategies to meet the goals
monitor progress
puzzle out problems in order to meet your goals.
What are the benefits?
Research has shown several benefits for teachers of coaching. A recent meta analysis of 60 individual studies (Kraft et al, 2018) identified improved instructional practice of teachers and clear academic gains for students. The authors also note that small scale programmes tend to have bigger impact.
As a teacher, benefits you’ll notice are the individualised nature of the programme, the sustained and intensive nature of the course, the fact that it’s focussed on key areas selected by you and the way it helps improve reflection on your own teaching.
How does it work?
You contact us with your specific needs and we design an outline programme that might suit you. In general, these are ‘packs’ of 10 hours. You meet with your coach remotely via Zoom, Teams, Meet, Skype or whatever works best for you. Each programme is individually tailored but may involve video observation of lessons, discussing plans and materials, preparing for qualifications or work-related challenges. Some areas we have helped previous teachers with are:
Teaching a new type of class (e.g. business, ESP, exams, young learner, remote teaching)
Gaining a qualification (Trinity, Cambridge teaching qualifications as well as governmental schemes)
Becoming a teacher trainer
Integrating phonology, grammar, discourse into classes
Integrating skills work into classes
Materials adaptation and creation
Classroom management
Assessment and testing
