Leo Selivan - What do we teach when we teach L2 vocabulary?

Leo Selivan, author of Lexical Grammar, joins us for this DT Open to explore how we teach vocabulary.

His book is a must for anyone interested in the relationship between grammar and vocabulary. It looks at recent developments in corpus linguistics and second language acquisition research, and outlines the important role which chunks play in textual cohesion and in fluency, as well as in grammar acquisition. The practical part of the book provides us with a large number of classroom suggestions and activities for making grammar teaching more lexical, and for making vocabulary practice more grammatical. As ever, this webinar will be followed up with a Q&A and info session about the DT Dip TESOL from our tutors. Come and take the opportunity to interact with the people you will see on the course.

What do we teach when we teach vocabulary?
The mastery of L2 vocabulary has many dimensions. Knowing a word in a foreign language involves not only knowing its meaning but also its pronunciation, derivative forms, collocations and grammatical patterns associated with the word. Some vocabulary specialists go as far as to specify 9 aspects of word knowledge learners need to master (Nation, 2001). Unfortunately EFL teaching materials tend to focus predominantly on the meaning ignoring other equally important components of word knowledge (Brown, 2011). This webinar, which takes a more all-encompassing view of vocabulary, looks at how these components can be addressed in vocabulary practice activities.
